THE LIST: notes on big and small topics (not always in order of importance, and always under construction) Send comments or questions to: lynnlandes@earthlink.net / or call 215-629-3553
What Makes Sense!
What Doesn't!Democracy and transparency - where the majority matters and the workings of government are observable. See: Voting Security & CountTheBallots.org
Oligarchy and nontransparency - where elections are silent auctions controlled by the wealthy few, where votes are privately processed, and decisions made behind closed doors.
Spreading the wealth and the risk, sharing power and responsibility
Concentration of assets in the hands of a few (all your eggs in one basket).
Protectionism - protecting our country's (any country's) business, industry, food, natural resources, skills, etc.
Globalism/Free trade - it's more like 'high treason', leaving a nation vulnerable to others for its vital needs, outsourcing jobs, not protecting local business and industry, allowing multi-national corporations to serve stockholders - not the public.
Local self-reliance in basic essentials: food, clothing, shelter, energy, water, transportation, communications, banking, military, ... producing for yourself / subsistance farming, etc
Shopping and Consuming - reliance on imports for the basic essentials of life,
Cooperation - lifts all boats
Competition - allows only one 'winner'
Meritocracy - advancement based on one's own skills
Royalty - where blood and money make the difference
Free health care and education - building incentives for a better world for all of us. It's the civilized thing to do.
For-profit health care / insurance / products and services - it's barbaric. Asking people to pay big bucks to be healthy and educated? Fleecing millions along the way? We should be paying them!
Robust public education that includes the entire community and all ages with lots of outdoor and hands-on activities and skills for low / medium / and high tech applications, such as: survival skills, farming, building, repairing homes, crafts (spinning, weaving, knitting, sewing), cooking, engineering & scientific research, computers, etc.
Endless hours of classroom instruction operating in a vacuum of real-life experience. It functions more like a prison to many people.
Publicly-owned and operated utilities, plus other stuff, including: education, transportation, water, energy, roads, parks, prisons, & sports teams!
Private and foreign ownership of public utilities (the commons)
Commercial-free TV, including lots of public service announcements (PSAs) that inform viewers.
Commercials! It's brain-washing the public to mindlessly consume.
Zero Waste - The recycling of all materials back into nature or the marketplace in a manner that protects human health and the environment. ZeroWasteAmerica.org
Landfills, incinerators, and graveyards
Properly planned communities where resources are managed for the benefit of all: cities, towns, villages, farms
Sprawl
Food-first health solutions
Drugs-first treatment protocol
Legal immigration - where society decides who should enter and who shouldn't.
Illegal immigration - a free-for-all. To lose control of a nation's borders is like leaving your front door open for anyone to come inside. It's unworkable. Both employers and illegal immigrants should be prosecuted.
Citizenship - should be conferred on children who have at least one parent who is a citizen of that country
Citizenship - on the basis of where a child is born (14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution)
Single citizenship
Dual citizenship
Military draft for all young men and women
Volunteer army - where the public at large is not invested in all the costs of war and young men are taught to think it's their patriotic duty. The end result is endless war.
Advanced military education at the academies (and elsewhere) should be available to all members of the military
Military academies for high school graduates is insular and encourages elitism in the ranks for a relatively small group of individuals
Social Dance - a cooperative sport that lasts a lifetime, and where anyone can participate.
Baseball, football, etc. - a competitive sport where injuries last a lifetime, and only a select few play it, anyway.
Below-This seems like small stuff, but it can make a big difference if it's an everyday occurrence:
Fresh air - free from scented products.
Perfume, fragrance - imposing one's sense of smell on those around you is really rude.
A chime-free outdoor environment
Outside chimes - imposing one's sense of sound on those around you, is also really rude.
always more coming...
always more coming...
